CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES

1. What’s an appropriate coming home outfit? Selecting a special outfit for your baby to wear home is very exciting for new parents. You can pick something as fancy or as simple as you’d like. The style is up to you, but we do have a few suggestions to help you narrow down your selection:
- Pick an outfit that’s seasonally appropriate. A new baby typically wears one extra layer than we do, with the exception of extremely hot weather. Winter babies should wear long sleeves and pants, and a hat. Summer babies can also wear long sleeves and pants, just make sure the material is soft and breathable.
- Consider the size of the outfit. Newborns come in all sizes and the unknown (how much will your baby weigh?) can pose a wardrobe challenge. To play it safe, we suggest sizes newborn (typically fits up to 7lbs) or 0-3 months. It’s better (not to mention safer) to have your little one more snug than swimming. You might also consider bringing a couple different options as one item may fit better than another.
- Watch the belly. When selecting an outfit, remember your little one will have a bandage on their belly button. Gowns and onesies are a more favorable choice over two-piece ensembles for their comfort and lack of contact with the belly.

2. What’s a converter gown? Converter gowns are our best-selling style of infant clothing. It changes from a gown to a romper with a few simple snaps, giving you two clothing options. If you’re not sure whether a gown you own converts, check the back. If you see a few snaps that run down the back of the gown, it most likely converts.

3. Do you have a sizing chart for babies clothes? Yes we do, but please remember that these are general guidelines and all clothing lines run differently: click here.

4. What is a layette and what clothing do I need to start with? A layette is a collection of clothing and necessities for a newborn child–a general guide to ensure you have all the basics for your little one for the first several months. You’ll typically need the following items in a range of 0-6 months in size: 1. A coming home outfit 2. 6-10 onesies 3. 6-8 pajamas 4. 6 gowns 4. 3-6 outfits with tops & bottoms 5. 6 pairs of socks 6.1-2 sweaters 7. 4-6 lightweight caps 8. 2 pairs of booties 9. 4-6 swaddling blankets 10. 4-6 bibs 11. A dozen burps 12. 2-3 hooded towels 13. 6-8 washloths 14. 2-3 sleepsacks

5. How many outfits per size should you have? You will probably change your little one’s outfit anywhere from 2 to 3 times a day. Also, try not to buy too many newborn sizes since they will outgrow this stage very quickly. Click here to see our Layette Guide.

6. Is there a specific type of laundry detergent you should wash your baby clothes in? While it is not a necessity, depending on your family history with sensitive skin it might be a wise precaution to use sensitive detergent until you know if your baby will have an allergy.

DIAPERING & CHANGING
1. Do I need a diaper pail? The job of a diaper pail is to make diaper disposal easy, convenient and scent-free. And while they do make diaper changing more efficient, they can be hard to turn and don’t completely conceal the smell. We find that many of our clients keep small disposable bags at their changing station. After they change a diaper, they tie it up in a bag and toss it in their kitchen trash or an outside garbage bin. If you do choose to buy a diaper pail, we recommend The Diaper Dekor. It’s hands-free (no twisting or turning)–you just step on the pedal and the diaper disappears: click here.

2. Why do some moms have an extra diaper caddy in the house? Many parents find it convenient to have the basic changing necessities (changing pad, diapers, wipes, rash ointment, etc) in a portable caddy that can be left in the main living space of their home. This is especially easy and convenient if your house is two levels and the nursery (the main changing area) is on the second floor.

NURSING & FEEDING

1. Why don’t you sell bottle warmers? We believe a bottle warmer is not a true necessity. If you need to warm a bottle, a cup of warm water works just as well.

2. What bottles are the best? And are glass bottles safe? We have all the answers you’re looking for in our Guide to Bottles.

3. Is the Wash Pod safe? Can’t I just wash my baby in the sink? Yes, the Wash Pod is safe as long as it is used according to the safety instructions. If you’d like to use your sink for bath time, which many parents do, we recommend using a bath insert. To learn more read our Guide to Bathtubs: click here.

4. Why do you recommend the Medela Freestyle breast pump versus other brands/styles?
Medela’s primary focus is breastfeeding. Their commitment to quality products and supportive programs has made them the industry leader and primary supplier of breastpumps to healthcare facilities in the United States. The Freestyle breastpump provides moms the freedom for true pumping mobility and comfort. It features a hands-free dual electric pump, weighs less than one pound and can fit in the palm of your hand. To achieve the hands-free, dual electric pump option, you can also use the Medela bustiers with the Medela Pump-in-Style. If you are unsure if the Freestyle is right for you and you would like to learn more, we recommend the Medela product selector found on their website by clicking here.

5. When will my baby start eating solid food? Most infants can be introduced to real foods sometime between 4-6 months. We always recommend checking with your pediatrician to be sure your little one is ready.

6. What is the benefit to making your own baby food versus buying it at the store? The benefit to making your own food is knowing what is in it. We carry a great baby food maker, which makes preparing the food easy and effortless. To learn more, click here.

FURNITURE

1. How long can you use a Moses basket? When using a Moses basket it’s important to refer to the safety instructions included and follow the given guidelines. Generally speaking, they can be used up to 3 months old.

2. Do I need a bassinet for the house?
While not a necessity, bassinets can be a wonderful option for many parents. The most common reason parents choose to use a bassinet are:
- They would like the comfort of having the baby sleep in their room, next to their bed, so they can keep a watchful eye.
- They plan on breast-feeding and prefer not to have to get out of bed for each feeding.
- They have a two-story house with a nursery upstairs and would like the option of having a bassinet in the main living area so it’s easy to place their little one down for naps during the day.

There are a few considerations to make when selecting a bassinet. Outside of price and style, consider:
- Do I need the bassinet to be easily portable, or on wheels to move around?

- Does my stroller come with a bassinet feature that I can use in a similar fashion to a traditional bassinet?

To see our bassinet selection, click here.

3. I love the idea of an all white chair, but my friends think I’m crazy. Is an all white chair completely impractical? As long as the chair has a slipcover that is made from a machine-washable material, we are all for the idea! All white machine-washable fabric is bleachable and can be a great option for your chair.

4. Do you sell drop side rail cribs? We do not sell any drop side rail cribs. Beginning June 28, 2011, all cribs manufactured and sold (including resale) must comply with new and improved federal safety standards. The new rules, which apply to full-size and non full-size cribs, prohibit the manufacture or sale of traditional drop-side rail cribs, strengthen crib slats and mattress supports, improve the quality of hardware and require more rigorous testing. The details of the rule are available on CPSC’s website by clicking here.

5. When should I start ordering furniture? All of our vendors have different lead times, which means furniture shipping dates can vary as widely as 3-24 weeks (although most can be received in 10 weeks from ordering). We recommend you considering your selection around the 14th week of your pregnancy. This allows you ample time for researching, ordering and selecting. Plus, it’s always best to order sooner rather than later to avoid last minute stress.

CRIB BEDDING/MATTRESSES
1. Will my crib come with a mattress? Crib mattresses are typically sold separately from the crib itself. However, always be sure to ask before purchasing your crib–there are instances where the two are sold together.

2. When will I use a sleepsack? What do I put on my baby underneath the sleepsack? After the swaddling stage (about 3 to 4 months), many parents use a sleepsack (a wearable blanket) instead of opting for a regular baby blanket. Sleepsacks keep the baby snug and ensure that no loose blanket will cover their face and interfere with their breathing. When using a sleepsack, dress your child in an appropriate pajama, then place them inside the sleepsack. To learn more, you can refer to our Guide to Sleepsacks.

3. What do I need to know when selecting a crib mattress? The general rule of thumb when buying a crib mattress: the firmer, the better. And the crib mattress should fit snugly–there should be one-inch or less between the edge of the mattress and the side of the crib.

4. There are two standard types of crib mattresses: foam or innerspring.
We’re frequently asked which is better. The truth is, the quality of the mattress is more important than the style. We recommend the Colgate Classica 1 mattress for two reasons:
- The Colgate Classica I was rated #1 of all crib mattresses tested by one of the nation's leading consumer products.
- While the mattress is firm and dense, we still find it manageable when it comes to changing the crib sheet. Many times when changing the crib sheet you need to pull up the mattress or remove it from the crib entirely. The Colgate Classica I is lightweight yet still very firm and safe for baby.

5. How do I know what size crib mattress to buy? The size of a standard crib mattress is regulated by the Federal government. The size is 28 (-3/4") x 52 (-3/8"), with a thickness no greater than 6 inches. Cribs are also regulated, but their interior dimensions have a "plus or minus" tolerance from the standard 28 x 52 rectangle. Therefore depending on the specific crib and mattress combination, the mattress may be very snug or moderately snug.

6. When am I supposed to lower our crib mattress? We recommend you lower your crib mattress to the lowest level position as soon as your little one can sit up.

7. How many fitted crib sheets do you need? We recommend 3-4. Remember one will be on the crib, one might be in the wash and you’ll want at least one at the ready.

8. Do I need a flat sheet for the crib? The only sheets used on a crib are a waterproof protector and a fitted one. Top sheets and quilts are not recommended in a crib as a safety precaution. For further guidance about crib bedding, read our Guide to Crib Bedding.

GEAR
1. Do I need a bouncy seat and a swing? Every child is different; many babies love bouncy seats and swings, while some could do without either. If you’re registering, it can’t hurt to register for both. Just leave the swing boxed up and start with a bouncy seat–if they love the bouncy seat there’s a good chance they’ll also enjoy the swing. If you’re purchasing (not registering) and want to invest your money in one or the other, we definitely recommend a bouncy seat. A bouncy seat offers parents an easily portable and lightweight baby seat that can be moved from room to room. This is especially helpful when:
- You’re home alone and need to take a shower (you can bring it right into the bathroom)
- Anytime you need to free up your hands (making dinner, doing laundry), your little one can still see you while you get everything done.
- To read more about bouncy seats, you can read our Guide to Bouncy Seats.

2. When do I need to purchase a highchair?
Generally speaking most babies start using a highchair at 4 to 6 months, which is when most are able to sit up and start solid food. A small selection of highchairs, such as the Bloom Fresco, are designed with a reclining seat that allow you to place a newborn in the highchair.

3. Which monitor should I choose? We have all the answers you’re looking for in our Guide to Monitors. Read more by clicking here.

4. What do I need to take in my diaper bag at all times? Click here to find our diaper bag checklist There are many options.

5. How do I choose the right bouncy seat? Click here to read our Guide to Bouncy Seats.

6. Do you really need a sound machine? A sound machine is a great tool for getting your baby to sleep. White noise in the nursery will not only put them to sleep, but keep them asleep through the night.

7. Is using a sling safe? Yes, baby slings are safe when used properly and according to the manufacturer’s safety guidelines. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents and caregivers:
- Place the baby’s face at or above the rim of a sling or wrap so that their face is visible. You should be able to see their face or eyes, and they should be able to see you.
- After nursing, change the baby’s position in the sling so that the baby’s face is at or above the rim of a sling or wrap and that their face is visible and clear of fabric and the mother’s body. You should be vigilant about frequently checking your baby in a sling.

For more information you recommend please read this article posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission posted November 2010: click here.

8. What should you do when your monitor is showing your neighbors house? We recommend using a digital monitor, such as the mobicam, to avoid this strange and scary situation. Click here to read our Guide to Monitors.

9. When do babies typically start walking? Remember that every child is different, however, most babies take their first steps sometime between 9 and 12 months, and are walking well by the time they're 14 or 15 months old.

STROLLERS & ACCESSORIES

1. Is the seat on my stroller also my car seat? This is a popular misconception and the answer is no. You will need to buy a car seat regardless of whether you purchase a stroller. For more guidance, please refer to our Guide to Car Seats.

2. How do we know which stroller is best for us? The most overwhelming decision for most parents is how to determine which stroller will be best suited to their needs. We would be happy to walk you through the options in store, or you can read through our Guide to Strollers.

3. Do I need more than one stroller? Why will I want an umbrella stroller? Click here to read our Guide to Strollers.

4. What's the best stroller in the store? All of our strollers are wonderful and each offers something different. To find your perfect match, you should consider your lifestyle. Do you travel frequently? Are you a runner? If you come in store we can walk you through our models, or you can check out our Guide to Strollers.

5. When can I start jogging with my infant? You should not jog with an infant younger than three months old. Infants incapable of holding their head up should have additional head and neck support to ride safely and comfortably. Most importantly, be sure to follow any suggested guidelines included in your stroller instruction booklet.

6. How do you decide which strollers to carry? We are constantly researching and testing all of the strollers on the market. Our goal is to offer the best selection that suit specific lifestyle needs, while offering the best value. We also make sure the companies we work with stand behind their product 100% and offer exceptional customer service.

CAR SEATS

1. Is the seat on my stroller also my car seat? This is a popular misconception and the answer is no. You will need to buy a car seat regardless of whether you purchase a stroller. For more guidance, please refer to our Guide to Car Seats.

2. At what age do you move into a toddler car seat? Moving your child from an infant car seat to a toddler seat is based entirely on weight and/or height. Most infant seats have a weight limit of 22 to 35lbs. When your child hits the limit of your specific infant seat, it’s time to change.

3. How long will our child face backward in the car? According to the American Pediatrics Association, children should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. When children reach the highest weight or length allowed by their infant-only seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible seat. If possible, it’s recommended the child remain rear-facing until the age of 2. To learn more about car seats, read our Guide to Car Seats.

4. How do we know if our car seat is installed properly? If you have questions or need help installing your car safety seat, find a certified CPS Technician. Lists of certified CPS Technicians and Child Seat Fitting Stations are available on the NHTSA Web site at www.nhtsa.gov or at www.seatcheck.org. You can also get this information by calling 866/SEATCHECK (866/732-8243) or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236.

5. If I don’t get my car seat off my registry, when should I buy it? Your car seat is the single most important purchase you will make because it is the only item you are legally required to have. Because you need a car seat to leave the hospital, we advise all of our parents-to-be to buy one no later than one month before their due date (in the event you are put on bed rest or deliver earlier than your scheduled date). Furthermore, if you’re choosing a special-order car seat there may be a few weeks lead time between ordering and receiving.

BABY ESSENTIALS

1. How many bibs and burp cloths will you need? Trust us, you can never have too many. We recommend 6 bibs and 12 burps to start.

2. At what age does a child start teething? Although every little one is different, on average most babies begin teething between 6 to 18 months.

3. How do you swaddle a baby? Click here to see a YouTube video demonstration.

4. How many towels do you need? We recommend two to three.

5. Why do I need to register for cloth and plastic bibs? Cloth bibs are ideal for early infancy when your child is drooling and spitting up more frequently. The fabrics tend to be soft so you can wipe your little ones face without irritation. Plastic bibs are best for when you introduce solid foods because they’re easy to clean and much more durable.

6. How long will I swaddle our baby? In general, most babies are swaddled until they’re 3 to 4 months old–or until they break free on their own. Once they can release themselves from the swaddle, it’s unsafe to continue swaddling.

7. Why is Sophie the Giraffe so popular? Sophie the Giraffe has been around since 1961 and hasn’t changed in all these years. Sophie is slender, flexible and soft, and babies can squeeze and chew her in complete safety. Even better, she makes a happy sound when her body is squeezed and is perfect for soothing sore gums when teething.

GIFTS/TOYS/BOOKS
1. Do you have any Christening gift ideas? Yes, we have a wonderful selection of Christening gifts for both girls and boys. To help you make your selection, there are several factors we consider when offering gift ideas:
- The age of the child. If the child is older (3 and up), we often suggest something more interactive and fun, like a Noah’s Ark stuffed toy or a Prayer Book they can enjoy reading with their family. If it’s a younger child or an infant, a silver keepsake or a beautiful lamb (remember, Lamb of God) is a wonderful option.
- A personalized gift: We offer beautiful gifts that can be engraved with the child’s name and Christening date, like a porringer or a pewter baby cup. Keep in mind that we need approximately 10 business days to complete these special orders.
- For a boy or girl. For the girls, one of our favorite gifts is a pearl bracelet with a cross, and for boys (or girls) we love the Quiet Church Bag–a small sack that can be filled with books and toys to keep them quietly entertained during church services. For more ideas, you can visit our Christening Gift selection by clicking here or call us at 404.869.8665.

2. I need to buy a gift for twins. Am I supposed to buy two separate gifts? Although it’s unnecessary to buy two separate gifts, it all depends on the gift selection. If it’s a toy or a book that can be shared, a single gift is completely acceptable. However, a stuffed animal, blanket or an item of clothing can only be enjoyed by one child at a time so in those cases, two matching gifts are best.

3. To learn more or purchase click here.

4. What are good toys for newborns? Anything soft or anything that makes noise. Try our best-selling Skwish or any of our cornstarch rattles or wood rattles. And you can never go wrong with fan-favorite Sophie the Giraffe.

5. What are the best gifts under $50? There are so many to choose from. We’d love to help you over the phone or you can check out our online gift selection of gifts under $50.

6. I’m looking for a unique baby gift. What are some good options?
We offer several one-of-a-kind gifts. We also have a wonderful selection of personalized gifts here. To better serve you and your request, you can call the store or come in for more personalized service.
